Activity Description

Stormsriver Adventures is a professional eco-friendly entity situated in the heart of the majestic Tsitsikamma Forest region. The company boasts eco and adventure activities which include the Woodcutters Journey. Experience the uniqueness of the Tsitsikamma Forest on a journey down the old Stormsriver Pass through the indigenous forest from the comfort of a specially-designed vehicle. Follow the elephant migratory route, passing yellowwoods, and stinkwoods, while hearing about the history of the area and the indigenous fauna and flora.

We take you back centuries ago, observed silently by giant trees, gently nodding their green heads in the soft Tsitsikamma breeze. The tour takes place in a pristine wilderness environment carefully selected for its uniqueness and unsurpassed beauty allowing clients to absorb the beauty of the indigenous forest. Information is presented by trained professional guides explaining culture, fauna, and flora such as the Knob Wood tree originally used for toothache by the Khoisan, identifying plants such as the “Bushman’s bedding” which was used as a natural insect
repellent. The unique Khoi word “TSITSIKAMMA” which means “place of many waters”.Bird sounds such as the Fish Eagle’s call and the shy Narina Trogon add value to the customer experience especially when these birds are visible.

The historical Stone building was used as a hunting lodge and meeting place for hunters and is the oldest building in Stormsriver. The Woodcutters Journey ensures a personal experience standing next to a giant Hard Pear tree feeling like a dwarf by this unique creation. You will encounter beautiful Tree Ferns hundreds of years old.
Guides deliver extensive narration to clients throughout the whole tour.

Customer Reviews

Thank you very much to mr Ashley Wentworth for affording my family and me to go on the Woodcutters'Journey in the Tsitsikamma forest, which happened to be my husband's birthday. We were very friendly received and seated in the reception area by a staff member. After being introduced to our guide Sibusiso he briefed us thoroughly and escorted the family to our sightseeing vehicle. Sibu is a very knowledgeable guide who told us many interesting anecdotes and stories about the history and facts of the area i.e. Thomas Bain and his building of the passes in the Cape. He also flaunted his knowledge of the myriad of trees and plants in the Park and identified many of them when stopping and explaining certain characteristics about each and the Tsitsikamma forest in general. After eating our lunchboxes in the lovely picnic area we returned to our departure point. We enjoyed the journey tremendously with a very knowledgeable and informative guide as well as an experienced driver. Thank you to Tsitsikamma Adventures for creating job opportunities for local people and thereby for tourists to enjoy our SA indigenous forest. - Bea

We had a wonderful time on the Woodcutter's Journey! It was a fascinating tour down the valley, with interesting facts and a brilliant guide and driver. We would highly recommend this to others, it's a great activity! - Olivia

A very interesting experience and very informative. Well guided and explained. Overall a very professional and highly recommended experience - ROGER

We booked this tour without reservation because we initially wanted to do the Canopy but it was raining a lot that day. Even though they warned us reservations were closed, they still managed to squeeze us in for a private tour with Clemens. He was the most worldly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable guide I've seen in the Garden Route. He knows every single plant, insect, soil and animal around, and he's very engaging and can easily read the crowd. He answered all our questions and more; the driver (I think his name was Adrian) was also very helpful and we had an overall five-star experience. The blankets and the roof cover were definitely a must have. - Clara

My wife Valerie Laue and I had the most incredible experience on the Woodcutters Journey. My wife posted a full review on Tripadvisor praising our guides, their knowledge, as well as their interaction with us. In her review she also recommended that Tree and Nature Lovers should not miss the opportunity of experiencing the Woodcutters Journey for themselves. - Ronald
